Located between two spectacular waterfalls, the Piano del Valasco (1760 meters above sea level) is a vast plain of alpine meadows which accommodate a multitude of colourful endemic flowers and leaves such as the Cinque foglie di Valdieri (Potentilla valderia). Originally, the Piano del Valasco was a glacial lake that, over millennia, has given way to a green area in the middle of a circular ore rock erosion, debris of stone and snow-capped peaks. Right here, King Vittorio Emanuele II built a hunting residence, now converted into a haven for hikers (Valasco Refuge), a square with towers and battlements. The proposed route to reach this peaceful and bucolic plateau consists of an old military route built in the 1930’s, which is closed to traffic.
