Lauzanier Lake

Departure from Pont Rouge – City of Larche

Place of departure:
Larche, 25 km from Barcelonnette.

Type of handicap:
chair ear mental eye joelette

Characteristics of the route (A/R):
Distance: 9 km
Vertical drop: 380 m
Walking time: 3 h

The valley was carved out from Lauzanier thousands of years ago by a huge glacier. In the last century, there were still cereal crops and hay meadows present in this area at 2200 meters above sea level. This pastoral and agricultural use has fostered a great diversity of plant and flower species, including the iconic “Queen of the Alps”. The fauna is diverse: chamois, ibex, marmots, bearded cultures … About 7000 transcend upon the Lauzanier pastures every year. The proposed route, given the quality label of “Tourism & Handicap”, is equipped for the disables and, for the first 500 meters, passable in a wheelchair. The route then goes through alpine meadows, on which marmots play, and ends at Lake Lauzanier, which is dominated by the small chapel, Notre-Dame-des-Lumières.

Itinerary description

1 From the car park, where there are information boards on the Mercantour National Park, follow the GR®5 (white-red indication) that goes up the valley. The first 500 meters of the train are independently accessible by wheelchair. Two multi-sensory reading cards have been designed specifically for the visually impaired and those who are hard of hearing (PNF/GMF).

2 The path gently climbs on the left bank of the Ubayette, which winds through a wetland. You will pass near the Eyssalps grange, where you may meet a shepherd with his flock in the pastures. 3 When the path starts to become steeper, you can see on your left the falls of the Encalusette and the Lauzanier Lake.

4 Continue uphill to the lake, which reflects the dominating mountains. The return journey is then along the same path.
