Cannon’s Yard

Departure from the San Giacomo di Entracque Hiking Hut in the City of Entracque

Place of departure:
San Giacomo di Entracque, at 30 km from CuneoAn impalpable bond, whose name preserves the memory, combines the village of San Giacomo di Entracque with the famous city of Santiago de Compostela. In San Giacomo, passers-by and pilgrims receive shelter and hospitality from a monk in the Abbey of Pedona before continuing on their way towards the hill of Fenestre. While some stopped at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fenestre, the most daring continue towards the Pyrenees and other districts. The proposed route was probably a secondary Roman road, which, over the centuries, became one of the most important shopping streets of the Southern Alps for salts and fabric. At the end of the road, the Cannon’s Yard (name as it was a holding place for the Italian artillery during the last war) is a lookout over the glaciers of Gélas (3143 meters altitude). Today, the prairies and the presence of chamois and ibex and the melodious sound of the streams of water and the marmots whistling all make this viewing point a place of peace.

Itinerary description

1 From the hiking hut, take the gradually climbing path following the river up to the stone pasture, “Gias Isterpis”. The road is surrounded by a multitude of interesting plant species: for example, different species of orchids, ferns, and forget-me-nots. As you climb, the landscape of the foothills of Gélas (3143 meters) opens in front of you. The Maritime Alps National Park and the Mercantour National Park have organized numerous releases of vultures in this valley in recent years.

2 Continue until you reach Cannon’s Yard, (1433 meters above sea level): admire the splendid panorama of the Gélas (3143 meters), the highest peak of the Mercantour Massif. The stony and grassy slopes, lining the path, are inhabited in summer by marmots, chamois and ibex.

3 You return by going back on the same route.
